KAvala - OKTOBER 2016

Building the second communal space
in a refugee camp on Greek mainland.

Kavala, a town higher inland of Thessaloniki close to the border of Macedonia and near Turkey, where people mainly from Idomenie where brought to. People stayed near Kavala for more then 7 months when we arrived in August 2016. Waiting for the next step in their procedure, because going by theme selves further to Europe was no option any more and going back is still a no go area.

Together with the people from the camp community, locals from Kavala and international volunteers we built a community space for the children and women. In close collaboration with NGO Northern Lights Aid we adjust the structure on demand of the wishes that came out of the communal meetings with the women during the construction process.

A lot of talent and creativity we discovered in our wonderful building team. Every day we eat together, shared stories of our past, shared joy and sad moments and grow as a family with brothers and sisters. Each one of the team was very valuable and brought something to make it possible to built this beautiful community space.

Also the local material companies where very dedicated to the project and passed by many times to see how the project was developing. We are very thankful to them for their gifts, wonderful collaboration and support during the construction period. Great to know you will be always around and open to support in any way.

The making of.

The roofs of the six smaller house shaped spaces are covered with the rubber of the boats collected at the Greek Islands. This time they came from Lesbos by a colleague architect of Odyssea, based in Athens.
